There has always been a need for management action to get involved in the implementation and review of a business software strategy. The first issue that is faced by decision makers is the priority list of potential business software projects. The priorities are supposed to come from the business plan and an understanding of the market requirements.

This prioritization of business software will create winners and losers depending on the section upon which the emphasis has been placed. The selection of particular departments as a trial for the business software portfolio will add prestige and visibility to that part of the organization. Therefore it is taken to be a great catch to be able to deal with the latest business software initiatives.

In order to select the best business software projects, one has to have objective assessment criteria that are able to ignore personal bias in the creation of the priorities of the business software system. Once a conclusion is reached on the basis of sound management practice, the manager will then have to think of ways of turning that vision into reality for the company. The market is full of various alternatives that will be very persuasive for the executive but they have to stick to the objective criteria in order to get the best deals for the organization that they are working for.

During the implementation process for the business software program, there will be the need for constant management supervision to ensure that the objectives of the company are not lost within the detail of the day to day tasks. The manager will also be able to champion the work of the people who are working on the business software project in addition to giving them advice from time to time.

Companies will decide whether someone can have this job on a permanent basis or whether it can be contracted out to someone on a temporary placement from another department. The permanent post will create a certain level of continuity in dealing with the business software requirements.

On the other hand the short term post will only deal with the immediate problems and may not be so effective in the long term future of the business. The creation of a reasonable balance between these two extremes is the ideal. For example a manager might be given permanent responsibility for the business software projects.

The organization itself has to buy into the idea of a modern business software system before it can move on to implementation.  If the issue is not taken to be a top priority within the organization the all the implementation work will go to waste and there will be no tangible results to show for the allocation of resources.
